Gerber One Flip Blade Knives

Gerber Legendary Blades review

UPDATED :

IN THIS ARTICLE WE FOCUS ON GERBER GEAR KNIVES AND IN PARTICULAR TWO OFFERINGS WITH A GREAT SINGLE-HANDED OPENING SYSTEM. THIS OPENING SYSTEM MEANS THEY ARE CATEGORISED AS WHAT THE KNIFE COMMUNITY KNOW AS "FLIPPERS". FAST, EASY OPEN AND SAFE TO USE, THESE TWO KNIVES HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB DONE, NO MATTER WHAT.

INDEX KNIFE

Gerber index knife review

QUICK. RUGGED. SECURE.

Built for durability in daily use, the Index is a hefty version of the finger flipper design.

The angular handle is textured for grip, and the blade can be deployed by the dual thumb studs or the finger flipper. A pocket clip and lanyard hole provide carrying options.

The bold colours and angular design of the Index finger flipper knife reflect the rugged, everyday use that it was intended for.

WHAT WE THINK...

The Index has accompanied me in my pocket around the house, at work and when out and about in the outdoors for around a month now and although the styling isn't the most elegant the rugged build is confidence inspiring and the bright colouring (red or blue options available) make it easy to find and keep and eye on... No getting lost under debris for this blade!

The index is not only a hefty feeling knife, which lends a good deal of strength and rigidity to things, the weight makes it easy to know you are carrying it when you do that all-important ritual pat-down to check you are carrying everything.

Tip up is a perfect option for carrying as far as I'm concerned and the flipper design allows you to rapidly and safely deploy the blade, the finger guard created when the blade locks in place is a very welcome aspect too.

The clip itself is large enough to cope with thick materials of winter trousers and the lanyard whole allows you to attach your own security loop or dummy cord.

The flipper hinge and liner lock were a little stiff to operate at first but over a week they loosened up nicely.

Knife buffs might not appreciate the relatively soft steel of the blade but it comes packaged with a razor edge and although it might not last that long, its dead easy and quick to sharpen making it a solid workhorse knife.

GERBER ONE-FLIP NKIFE

Gerber one flip blade

FLIP. ELEGANT. CONTOURED.

With a unique, stylish aesthetic and a subdued yet eye-catching colour scheme, the Gerber One-Flip quickly grabs attention.

The finger flipper quickly deploys the graceful blade, acting as an extra finger guard when in use.

Unusual textured anodised aluminium handle scales provide grip and add distinctive flair to this everyday carry knife with a slimline and elegant yet robust blade and easy carry pocket clip.

WHAT WE THINK...

The Gerber One-Flip shares a lot of features with the Index, including the aluminium construction and layout meaning that its just as tough and rugged feeling.

There's the same ample weight when carrying and the same rigidity and confidence - inspiring heft.

Unlike the Gerber Index the profile when open or closed is a little thinner, slightly shallower in depth and less width in both the blade and the handle, which make it slightly less bulky to carry.

The layout and the flip design are more or less identical to the Gerber Index too, which are ideal for me as I'm a right handed user. They both carry equally well in a right hand jean pocket.

Where the Gerber Index is brightly coloured and highly visible the Gerber One-Flip is a little more subdued in a green/tan colour way that actually goes really nicely with Multicam and looks quite "tactical".

The scaled surface on the grip looks unusual, you don't often see this kind of texture on metal handled blades, but it offers good grip. There's no dummy cord location on the Gerber One-Flip so make sure you don't drop it in use!

With the same steel blade as the Gerber Index, the One-Flip knife is just as easy to sharpen but will of course lose its edge relatively quickly when set to hard tasks.

With that said neither are particularly expensive products and actually feel a hell of a lot more expensive than they really are!
